FRIVOLOUS THOUGHTS (Draft 1)

We are making our school paper. I have the chance to make a column, and so this is it. I don't know if this will be the final column to be published because I am planning to change it. But, anyway, here it goes.

Bellboys Ring

Let me tell you a story.

It was the first day of work for this young man. He really wanted to make good impressions to everyone in his work. He planned to solve every problem that he encounters – for it is his first job anyway. He entered the establishment feeling dandy.

The first hours went on fine. He would smile about nothing, just trying to make good impressions to everyone. He would give jokes to others. He would make their lives easier. However, things changed abruptly. He would try asking some people to do this and do that. He would reprimand people who would do wrong. Then, he spotted a man drinking coffee with his feet held high on the table. “You idiot,” he said, “Why are you just resting here where in fact you should be with them?”

The other man got upset with the tone of the voice and said, “Who are you?!”

“Just a man they call, bell boy.”

“Well,” the angry man replied, “I’m the owner of this hotel.”

Moral of the story?

Know your limitations. A bell boy cannot just go around reprimanding different people. He has his rightful job to do. He is not tasked to cook. He is not tasked to make people do this and do that. His job was not to manage the hotel, but just to carry bags of people arriving.

In the story, I am the hotel owner. I just came back from a business trip in Japan and now I am resting for some time. After it, I would return to work. Then, this bellboy would enter my room, and reprimand me. Obviously, I would feel small, with an anvil falling down to me. Who wouldn’t? Why would he ask me to do something like this? Who is he anyway?

I’m not trying to drag down bellboys. I just made it a metaphor. It’s just so irritating for someone to think he’s something where in fact, he’s just nothing. It’s so annoying that people tend to think they’ve got all the power in the world, where in fact, they don’t have. Hello?! When will they ever wake up?

If you have become a celebrity, it doesn’t mean that you are to make a gap with fans already; thinking that these fans are just cheap and that they should distance themselves from celebrities.

If you were the president before, it doesn’t mean that you still got that power to command people; knowing that the people you were commanding before, are now your boss.

If you have become the head judge for a contest, it doesn’t mean that you already have the right to choose the winner on your own; knowing that there are still other judges to make the final decision.

A celebrity and a fan is still a person, so that gap that the celebrity is hoping for might be washed away. An ex-president must now watch and support as the next president sits. A head judge might consider looking at his left and right to see if his co-judges also agree to the decision.

It’s just that simple. No big! It’s just that details and decorations covered their inner being and these would make them proud of themselves. These would make them powerful. These would make them selfish. It may be too superficial to write something about this, but, I feel that this is the only way in which Emilio Aguinaldo, Ferdinand Magellan and Hermana Penchang would ever learn.

In the end, will the bellboy ever change? I just don’t know. What will happen to him if he worsens? Oh, God bless him. Should I speak up for such doing? Should I just keep quiet? I know it. You also have bellboys around you, trying to annoy you and humiliate you. Will you fire them? Or will you just let them stay and ruin your life?

While I do not mean to shot guns to people, it is not already my fault if you were the one shot by the stray bullet.

Lesson learned: NEVER BE BOSSY. It would seriously kill others’ integrity and your personality.
