Here are my top Three Photos of the Year.
[1]
Me on the see-saw. Spell nostalgia. You think I was having fun? I'm kinda. Haha. This is my top photo of the year. Having many likes on Facebook, I also think this is funny too.
[2]
From our acquaintance party which was cosplay, this photo of ours was the "almost complete" ensemble of the SOS Brigade. I was Kyon during that time.

Who would not consider this a photo of the year? You having a picture taken with a very pretty girl. Right? Right? From our field trip at Manila. She was a tour guide at SPUM. Ugh. Gorgeous.
Movie of the Year:
My movie of the year is Michael Gondry's Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004). Everything is perfect: the cast, the direction, the cinematography, the story. Oh the story! Very good twist. Jim Carrey became one of my favorite actors because of this movie. Haha

Music of the Year:
Personally, Jessica Sanchez' rendition of Everybody Has a Dream caught my ears and tug my heartstrings the most of all the songs released this year. It's so heartfelt I never stopped listening from her song. Actually, on my iTunes, it's my most listened song. "Everybody has a Dream," she sang, "and this is my dream, my own: just to be at home and to be all alone with you."
Owl City's Metropolis from the album The Midsummer Station is a runner up. The song Dreams and Disasters follows after.
Owl City's Metropolis from the album The Midsummer Station is a runner up. The song Dreams and Disasters follows after.
Album of the Year:
Owl City's The Midsummer Station has been the best album I've heard this year. Although I do not consider it his best album, it contained many good songs which I often listen to. As a matter of fact, I bought one when we went for a field trip to Subic. Metropolis is my favorite song from the album though Good Time featuring Carly Rae Jepsen is deemed the most popular.
Book of the Year:
For me, the best book that I've read this year is Yann Martel's Life of Pi. It's a very breath-taking book and a page turner, it even stays beside me as I sleep. It explores the life of Piscine Molitor Patel or better known as Pi and his adventures after the shipwreck. After it, he is accompanied by a 450-pound Bengal Tiger named Richard Parker as they sailed aimlessly at the Pacific Ocean. That great twist at the end made me favor this book among others. It was such a great surprise I took me long to internalize it. Haha.
Runner up is Suzanne Collins' Catching Fire, the second book of the The Hunger Games series.

A ruined man's dream constantly
riveting the portals of insanity
has brought a seaming montage
of distorted thoughts. An espionage
has risen, uprising inside his mind
where happiness, he can not find.
He struggles amid the joy around
him though desperation has abound
his own reason. Amongst his frivolous
thoughts, he believes he is marvelous.
But to say he is good, fine and okay
is a pretty dull thing to even say.

Mockingjay
"My name is Katniss Everdeen. Why am I not dead? I should be dead. It would be best for everyone if I were dead . . ."
Mockingjay. The third book in the The Hunger Games series. This novel continues the events which took place at the second novel, Catching Fire. Katniss narrates that she was taken from the arena during the Quarter Quell and was saved by Plutarch Heavensbee, the Gamemaker, together with other living victors. Peeta and some others were taken to the Capitol. The rebellion did already start. There really is District 13, governed by President Coin. Katniss realized, she really was the Mockingjay, the one that started it all.
The novel, unlike the two others, was the one with the most deaths -- from little children to refugees to victors like Finnick to the two presidents and to Prim, her sister. Prim. I was surprised with her death. It was really unexpected and depressing to know that she was killed. She was innocent and just there to aid the injured.
The novel, written by Suzanne Collins, is I think too rushed with events happening quickly, especially the last parts. After the killings, the rebels succeeded immediately. I haven't even noticed how Snow was captured, then suddenly, he was to be executed. Then Coin was killed. Then Katniss was taken into the Training Center. Then she was freed. Then there was Peeta. Then they got married. Then they had children. It was a bit too fast for me.
Overall though, the novel is good. Not as great as the first two books though. I like how the novel ended peacefully, and Peeta and Katniss married is what I wanted since the start. I thank Suzanne Collins for her way of writing. I learned a lot from her. I'm really excited for the movie adaptation of this novel.
And ohh.
May the odds be ever in your favor...

Triple Move Treat
And here's to another batch of movies. I'm officially a movie buff.
P.S. I Love You. 2007. This rom-com revolves around Holly (Hilary Swank) and Gerry (Gerard Butler). When Gerry died of brain tumor, Holly had a hard time moving until letters from Gerry were sent to her and does whatever the letter says. I got to say, this is one of the best rom-coms that I have ever watched. Not the greatest, but one of the best. It is a originally a novel written by Cecelia Ahern. The story was very unique of a rom-com. Imagine a dead husband still sending letters to his wife who had a hard time moving on. And with these letters, she ventured on many things. She lost her job, found another, went to places, get rid of things, bought new things and the like. The music was great as well. The background songs were very well chosen. I like the main song that the actors were singing. The actors. Well, they pulled off a great performance. You can feel their emotions, especially Hilary Swank. They can make you believe everything happened. I give this film 92%.
Hunger Games. 2012. Set in a dystopic era, this novel-turned movie explores the life Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and how she played during the 74th Hunger Games. I've personally read the book before watching the movie so as not to spoil myself, I imagined myself not having read the book yet. Great plot of the film, I have to say that it was faithful to the novel. They either had portrayed what I imagined, and/or exceeded my expectations. I know that the director made that sure, so as not to disappoint many fans of the book out there. Except for the costume Katniss and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) wore during the parade. I thought otherwise. The actors were also great. Leading them is Jennifer Lawrence with her exceptional portrayal of Katniss. The music was very well made. I cannot wait for it's sequel, Catching Fire. I grade this film 90%.
Across the Universe. 2007. Set during the Vietnam war, this musical film exploring a British man's life when he stepped foot to America. Jude (Jim Sturgess) who aboarded to USA went in search of his father. There he met Max (Joe Anderson), and Max's sister Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood). From their place, they went to New York to discover life more. This film features songs written by the Beatles so except some singing to be done. I must say, the plot is a little disoriented and there are a bit unnecessary scenes in the film. There are too much characters being introduced here and there. The songs chosen were great considering the big song book of the Beatles. Great arrangements of the song as well. The actors were good both in singing and in acting. I give this film 85%.

Another Batch of Movies
Another batch of movies. :)
Annie Hall. 1977. Co-written, starred and directed by Woody Allen, this romantic comedy film is one of the best rom-coms I've ever seen. Filled with witty jokes and endless antics, you would never stop laughing in this film. Of course, a trademark in this film is when Alvy Singer (Allen) would talk to the camera. Other times, he would approach walking strangers and talk to them as if they knew of his situation. When there is a flashback, they are present there. That is what I like about the film. The actors were amazing especially Diane Keaton who played Annie Hall. She was natural and gracious. Then there's Paul Simon. His role was funny and unimaginable. The plot was creative and simple. A divorced man and a woman dated and would break, then dated again, then would break. Then dated, then finally broke up but had signs that they might end up together again. I would rate this film 97%.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. 2010. Based on a graphic novel, this comedy-action film is about a Canadian boy named Scott Pilgrim (played by Michael Cera) and how he fought for the seven evil ex's of Ramona Flowers, the girl of his dreams. I was very much amazed by how the film looks like a moving comics, with the onomatopeic words flashing on the screen and others. The incorporation of the arcade-like scenes and the tokens were also amazing. The story was great, and the casting was perfect. I pretty much had a good laugh at the movie. The effects great I tell you. Too bad it was not a box office hit. It could have been though. I would give this film 96%.
No Strings Attached. 2011. Starring Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher, this film revolves around two friends who involve themselves into some action without any relationships in between, thus the title No Strings Attached. In the end, they fell in love with each other. Simple and superficial plot with very good main actors (Portman in particular), I think this is a mediocre movie for me. Nothing spectacular where I will remember forever. I give this film 81%.

On Catching Fire
(Source) |
What I love about this novel is that it was less morbid, and it has more twists than the first one. There were chapters where I am just sitting there in awe because I never expected that it would come. Especially the ending. It was the 26th chapter already and they were still inside the arena. The ending was very unpredictable. Who knew Finnick, Beetee, and Johanna were protecting Katniss all along? I never thought of that. I thought Finnick and Johanna were actually anatagonists who were trying to ally with Katniss, for she was the girl on fire.
There was one problem though. There were lots of characters in the story that I got confused with them and had to read back again to freshen my mind a bit. Nevertheless, the novel as a whole is good. I cannot wait to read Mockingjay, the third and last installment.

Hungry for More
Yesterday, I decided to read the novel my brother was so excited about, "The Hunger Games." It was never my plan to read the novel (since I'm not a book reader), but since I'm so left out because everyone seems to be in love with this book, I decided to read it. Furthermore, I've read somewhere that reading would improve the way you write. So I read it anyways. And after reading the first pages, I couldn't stop myself from reading. I could not put it down. It's a page turner! It's mind-stimulating. My mind is creating a lot of images. I'm loving this book!
The novel by Suzanne Collins is about a 16-year old girl named Katniss Everdeen and how she dealt the Games. She volunteered in place of her 12-year old sister Prim to go to the Hunger Games. Inside the arena, there were many challenges they undertook. They had to fend for themselves -- 24 of them -- and be alive. The last person standing wins. Of course, they had to kill the other tributes (the name of the selected 24) in order to survive while the whole country watches them. Of course, since Katniss was narrating the story, I pretty knew well that she would win. However, there was a slight twist. Peeta Mellark, her co-tribute from District 12, was her co-victor. It's a long story why so you have to read the book.
I probably would read the second novel tomorrow or tonight. Whichever the case, I'm so excited. I'm so hungry for more! And ohh, I'm so excited to watch the movie.
And ohh, may the odds be ever in your favor. :)

First Year Anniversary!!
Today, I am celebrating the First Year Anniversary of my Blog. It's such an amazing thing to have something alive and kicking after a year has passed. Looking back one year ago, it was midnight and drizzling, and I was really bored. A bright idea came to mind and this blog came to life! It has come a very long way already, I suppose. I never knew I could ever reach this far because I am a man who would always start something but never finish them.
Now what would happen for the next few years? All I know is that, with the emergence of my two other blogs, Lemons and Lemonades, and A Drooping Poet, this blog would have lesser posts, but rest assured, it would still be updated. Like what I said in my first post, a little patience and a little crisp of the mind will go a long way.

Personality Disorder
So I took a personality disorder test here. After answering YES and NO to a very long list of questions, I have arrived to my personality disorders. I was completely shocked with the result.
I'm a paranoid and an avoidant. I'm dependent and schizotypal. I'm somewhat obsessive-compulsive and schizoid and not the others. I was shocked when I read more on the information of those with very high ratings.
on being paranoid (taken from the site):
Honestly, that may be an exaggeration. I may not trust most people in this world that much, but I don't completely distrust them to the the point of having suspicions constantly whether or not they are dependable or not. I certainly do not have excessive trust in my own knowledge and abilities, I often doubt my abilities you know. And that part of avoiding close relationships. I'm not avoiding, I'm not just really into social groups that much. A close group with few friends would be great for me already. Okay, the succeeding sentences are not true already. I'm not that paranoid! I may have just misunderstood some of the questions. I'm re-taking this test.
on being schizotypal (also taken from the site):
Okay I am like this. I avoid social situations (I am a homebody and I would often stay at home though there are many gatherings and parties out there. That is probably why I only have a few friends, and trusts fewer of them. I have this fear of getting rejected especially when we talk about love matters (This may be the reason why I haven't courted a girl yet. I'm afraid of getting rejected. I always ask myself this, "What if she doesn't like me because I'm not handsome?" or, "What if I cannot give her everything and dump me?"). And yeah, I really do create a fantasy world where I rule everything, have all the things I want, and do the things I want. Plus I get to choose my girlfriend is. The last two sentences really struck me most. I do yearn for social relations, but somehow, I just can't have. I'm already 18, and having groups of friends whom I would get along with would be impossible. This is a province. I'm often depressed for many reasons and I know I have low self-confidence. I always had. Though in College, I have to muster enough Courage a bit to face the crowd.
So there goes my personality disorder. I am surely an avoidant. Sucks to be me.

My Poetry Blog: A DROOPING POET
So I made a blog where I would post a lot of my poems. It's entitled A Drooping Poet. Now why such a name? I really have no idea. I just thought of a random word and mixed it with the word poet. This is my pilot post:
So you won't be seeing any poems to be posted in this blog in the future.
Check it out: http://http://adroopingpoet.wordpress.com
I drool a lot, I spit on streets
I carry a cat which often greets
I’m homeless, I’m timeless, I’ve earned my degree
now wait till i write, you’ll wait and see.
I’m a drooping poet, I cave in a lot
I’m weak from exhaustion but you know what I’ve got?
I can write, I can sing, I can do most anything.
I open my eyes.
I’m done dreaming.

(I Can't Even Think of an Appropriate Title for this Post)
I often ask myself why do I win various writing contests where in fact I know to myself that I am not a good writer. I ask myself, how did I become the Associate Editor of our school paper where in fact I know that my subordinates are better than me. Honestly, I suck at writing. I always idolized many people when they write. I would curse them for writing brilliantly and out of my most frivolous thought, I would dare steal their imaginative minds and replace mine with them, or mix their brains and stick in my head. I just get jealous when I read great blogs and essays. How I wished I could write like them. Just reading them could take me far away, far from this chair that I am sitting at right now. They write so intricately, it's as if I have witnessed or I have seen the event or the thing they are describing. I myself cannot do that. I could mumble up some words and put them together, but the outcome would be so gross. So yeah, that's it. I don't know if I ever improve, but if I will, suck it losers! that would be great! Like yeah, whatever.
P.S. I don't know why but while writing this post, the single of Jessica Sanchez entitled, Change Nothing is playing in my head.

The Idol Madness
The whole world was watching. Many were nervous, including me, when they gave Ryan Seacrest, the host of the show, the card where the 11th winner of the hit TV series, American Idol, was placed. He announced it, and there we have, Phillip Phillips. I was shocked, but not totally, knowing that for the past few years, the winners were just like him, White Guys With Guitar (as the internet would call them) or WGWG.
BTW, I live in the Philippines so in no way I can vote for anyone in this singing competition. All I could do is watch them perform on TV, critic them in my own way, and wait for the results every Friday. This has been my trend since I started watching Idol during its seventh season. Ever since, I've been hooked up with this show and I would watch every year. I tried voting, but I know it would not be counted.
So it came to this finale where a diva and a guitarist would face to face in the finale, Jessica Sanchez, a 16-year old student from Chula Vista, San Diego, and Phillip Phillips, a 21-year old guy from Georgia. Both are talented singers, but I have been rooting for Jessica Sanchez since the beginning not because she's part Filipino, but because her singing prowess amazes me.
I was amazed by her when she sang Whitney's, "I Will always Love You," but I really began rooting for her when she sang, "Everybody Has a Dream," by Billy Joel. It was her greatest performance for me. Week per week, she became very consistent in giving us world class performances. She was supposed to be eliminated during the TOP 7 week but was saved by the judges. I can't find any reason why she had the lowest votes during that week where in fact, she was one of the best then.
And her competition was Phillip Phillips who was consistently using his guitar in almost every performance he had. Like any other past winners, he was never in the bottom three, though in some weeks, he deserved to be. I became a fan of him when he sang the song, "Volcano." Aside from that, he's just another guy playing guitar and singing bland songs. Another performance of his which was absolutely great was, "Beggin." I thought that was his best performance yet.
When Joshua Ledet, the great Gospel singer was eliminated, I thought in my mind that Jessica would win everything, but I predicted too soon. When I watched yesterday's performances, I thought she was in very big trouble.
The songs of the first round was given by Simon Fuller, the creator of the show. Her first song was, "I Have Nothing," by Whitney Houston. She sounded perfectly well, and there's no doubt in that. Phillip's "Stand by Me," had girls screaming for more. Round one for me went to Jessica hands down.
The songs of the second round would be their best performances of the whole season. Jessica's song was, "The Prayer," by Celine Dion and Andrea Boccelli, the song that let her to the Top 24. She did it very well that I had goosebumps all over me. It was just perfect. Phillips favorite was, "Moving Out," by Billy Joel, the song he sang during the Billy Joel week. I thought he did well, but I liked it better when he first sang it. Round Two was given to Jessica again although the judges had mixed reactions.
Round Three would be their potential singles if they won. This was the round where Jessica fell, in my opinion. She was given a song entitled, "Change Nothing," that doesn't match with her voice or her singing style, the tune was common and not that good, and the production was very simple. She did great vocally anyway. Phillip's song, "Home," was much much better in tune, in lyrics, in the production, though the voice was just mediocre. I started liking this song so much because it reminds me of Mumford and Sons. The judges gave him a standing ovation. I agree with them, this round went to Phillip.
Two is to one, Jessica might have won, but that was not the case. I've read many sites that says, Phillip's last song pulled many votes to him. That might be the reason why. Another reason was that, they do not want another race to win. In my opinion, this is not merely the case. I do not know the actual reason behind that. I was checking on DialIdol.com every now and then to check who was leading and Phillip was leading all the way. I had to respect their decision because they can vote, I can't. I'm not even an American.
We have a winner, our American Idol Season 11 is Phillip Phillips. He made a record to be the 5th consecutive guitar-playing guy on the show. Jessica, on the other hand, made history to be the youngest runner up ever, the first Asian-Mexican ever, and many more firsts.
Speaking of the fact that I'm not even American, we all know that Jessica Sanchez has mixed race: Filipino-Mexican-American. Here in the Philippines, we give our whole out support to her. Based from the News I've heard last night, in Bataan, her mother's home province, they threw parties and had a fiesta and even had a Jessica Sanchez day. All have been crazy over Jessica Sanchez, win or lose.
Right now, all I can think off is Jessica's future. I know she'll make it big. She'll have a huge career ahead of her. Based on what I've read, Tommy Mottola, the producer behind Jennifer Lopez and Mariah Carey already had plans for Jessica's CD and the songwriters of Rihanna and Beyonce are reportedly starting on the album. I can't wait for that one.
I can't wait for the 12th season. I've heard it's gonna be big and there's gonna be a lot of changes happening. We'll see.
Wait, did I mention to you that Jennifer Holliday and Jessica Sanchez had the best performance of the night and of the whole show?!

Phillips and Sanchez: the Top Two |
The songs of the first round was given by Simon Fuller, the creator of the show.
